Goal 5: Ensure Open and Responsive Government

Washington County Citizen Action Network seeks to create an environment where elected officials make decisions beneficial to all Washington County residents while considering not only short-term goals but also long-term consequences.
Working on the premise that properly educated officials will make beneficial decisions, the Washington County Citizen Action Network envisions enabling citizens to effectively engage their elected officials at the local, state, and federal levels.
A more open and responsive government can be achieved by
- Focusing attention on current and future issues;
- Publicizing government meetings and procedural rules;
- Providing advice on how to give public testimony;
- Encouraging citizen research;
- Enabling cooperation with others; and
- Sharing fact-based information.
Methods of engaging public officials will be identified, including how to access government officials, advocating that public meetings be held at times conducive to public attendance, and ensuring that each attending citizen is allowed a chance to present testimony at public hearings.
Finally, to further encourage our elected officials to put public benefit foremost in their decisions, WC CAN will compile a history of their votes and specific reasoning for said votes while making this information available for public review. This is particularly important for voters at election time.
